Awakening

There was a time when the great city that lay behind me looked grand when the opera house sang a thousand songs to me in the night sky as the ferry bell rang. I always find myself thinking about those nights in the city when life seemed so free , where anything could happen...really.... Tonight it got me thinking about courage and the lack of it . Here I was again ready to take to the road to a big city called New York city , but inside fear riddled its even tale and even though I knew deep down that greats had written in that very city , greats like Hemmingway and Plath and others who never even had a mention in any of our history books ...I was scared...

Scared that my courage was gone and no longer what it used to be when I so openly travelled the seven seas ...They say living in the city makes you strong , why is it that they call it an urban jungle then?

Jungles are never easy urban or rural...

I've been living in cities all of my life and longed for nature nonetheless... You can give me a skyline filled with post modern architecture and Guggenheim's masterpieces , thats all fine and dandy , I would rather have the ocean crashing on the shore or the night sky that spells love with a million stars... Thats just me...

But I got to thinking maybe cities aren't the problem , maybe taking a voyage into the unknown was the actual problem.

You see sometimes when we take to the road it seems easy , effortless even , leaving our pasts behind , our loves that we use to love, some of them married , some of them drifting from place to place so that soon they just become a memory we try to replace , we leave behind family and friends and the road opens up again... We don't have much to stay for in our homes so we go out searching for more.. Its a beautiful thing searching for more of ourselves... Christopher McCandeless did just that and as I am often told by those who know me , he travelled far and wide and then died... Yes , thats true but the journey isn't meant to be one we take on our own and Chris did a brave thing bracing the unknown courageously running against the very mill of society... I admire that , I admire that more than I admire movie stars or pop culture icons... I admire strength in people...

I guess thats one reason why traveling is so darn appealing because it wakes up and brings something new everyday... There is courage in that waking up each day so why not risk it anyway , get in your car and drive and see the flowers bloom in Wichita or fly to New York...

I once read a poem by some poet I can't remember his name but he said that when the rain hit New York at night you need not go anywhere because it would wash away all the grime of the day before...I like to think the rain does that anyway , wherever we are if its in the city or somewhere out near Nashville , Tenessee its all the same... Courage I have learned is taking the highway driving down south and then going back home to your past , your present and your future...Now wherever home may be thats another story all together , but I'll tell you this there aint nothing like a sunset that can't cure your fear ridden brain and make you believe in Gods miracles again...
